Volume 1 is live!

Hillfire Press proudly presents its debut anthology! *cue fanfares*

Volume 1 was published on May 20 and celebrated with a virtual launch designed to accommodate the team and the audience scattered all around the globe. We had several beautiful readings from some of our authors, and will be posting clips on our social media platforms shortly. Stay tuned if you missed the launch or would like to relive your favourite moments!

The gorgeous cover attached above was created by our very own Anna O’Connor, and we absolutely adore it. It was inspired by a dog we meet in a rice field in one of the short stories featured in the anthology – I won’t spoil the rest; you’ll just have to read the book to find out more!

The anthology itself features 33 emerging (or not so emerging) authors with fresh, unique voices. It is a collection of prose and poetry with genres ranging from literary fiction, comedy, and fantasy to social critique, among others. We meet a woman who swallows the sea, machines with a personality, hunters who decide the course of the future, homeless people who carry the cherished memories of their communities, and so much more! This project would not have been possible without our wonderful team of amazing volunteers, who worked extremely hard to bring everything together, iron out every detail, and make the anthology shine. We are extremely thankful for their dedication and their willingness to contribute their considerable skill and knowledge to make Hillfire what it is today.

“We need shared projects with a future more than ever, projects that bring people together, and that is what I am attempting with Hillfire Press,” said Lena Kraus, our Editor-in-Chief, when she first announced the creation of Hillfire to the world. Five months and one successful launch later, we can say with confidence that her aim was achieved. Hillfire brought together people from across the globe and reignited friendships that might have ebbed with distance and time, but were still smouldering and glowing somewhere beneath. We believe that our passion and the pure joy of creating stories together again are palpable in Volume 1.
